Citric acid is a weak organic acid that occurs naturally occurs in citric fruits, like lemons and limes. It can also be synthetically created from fungi and sucrose growth during fermentation within laboratories. It has a sour taste and can be used as a flavoring additive or preservative in food and beverage products.
It is used widely as a flavoring agent and acidifier (natural preservative by lowering pH, a very historical preservation technique).
