Clean Label Dominates Drug Stores

2016 overview

Dollar sales of clean label items at drug stores grew 6.4 percent in 2016.

 

 

Big increase in clean label FOOD SALES

$54 million in increased combined sales of clean label food and beverages in the following categories:

  • New beverages
  • Ice cream
  • Wholesome snacks
  • Cookies
  • Crackers

Salty Snacks

Sales of clean label salty snacks were up 12.5 percent, a $41 million increase.

 

Transparency Claims

Products making transparency claims are also on the rise in domestic drug stores.

 

Caffeinated Food and Beverage

Products making caffeine claims have declined 2 percent in the last year (despite having a higher share of food sales at drug stores than in other most retail stores).

Health Care

Products in the health care aisle of drug stores with claims of “no artificial colors or flavors” grew dollar sales by 10%.

 

Beauty

Transparency claims within the beauty care category also experienced massive growth. Dollar sales of products with cruelty-free claims saw a 83% growth from the previous year. Beauty products with packages claiming “no artificial colors or flavors” gained share of the aisle with sales growth of 27%.
