Alum (Aluminum Sulfate)

Also known as: Aluminum Ammonium Sulfate, Aluminium Potassium Sulfate

Aluminium sulfate is a chemical compound with the formula Al2(SO4)3  and is soluble in water. It is mainly used as a flocculating agent (causing contaminating particles to clump into larger, more easily trapped particles) in the purification of drinking water and waste water treatment plants, and also in paper manufacturing.

Alums, in general, are soluble in water, have a slightly sweet taste, react acid to litmus, and crystallize in octahedra.
