Irradiated Foods

Also known as: Irradiated, Irradiation

Irradiated Foods are food products that have been treated by a process known as ionizing radiation in order to increase shelf-life and preserve foods. Most often, ionizing radiation is completed using radioactive substances.

This treatment is used in order to improve shelf-life, decrease risk of pathogens, and slow eventual ripening. These foods are most commonly perishable items like fruits, vegetables, and meats.
