Monosodium Glutamate is a non-nutritive flavor enhancer. Its chemical formula is C5H8NO4Na. MSG is used to enhance and intensify natural flavors of food products. MSG is a white, powdery, and grainy substance before addition.

MSG is found most commonly in prepackaged snacks, canned products, instant foods, and Asian foods. MSG has been the topic of much controversy in determining whether consumption is safe.
